Black Friday 2026: How to Tell a Real Deal From a Fake Discount
Black Friday is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is November 30. Here is how to check any "was" price in about a minute, using the pricing patterns we see across 151 direct-to-consumer offers.

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday on Monday, November 30. Most of the savings you will see that week are real on big-brand items from big retailers. The part to watch is the long tail of direct-to-consumer pages, where the crossed-out price is often the whole trick.
We review 151 products that are sold directly by the brands that make them, alongside 415 we send readers to Amazon for. For seven of those direct offers we tracked the price closely this autumn. The crossed-out "regular price" was a median of 2.0 times what anyone actually pays, and 3.3 times in the worst case. A handheld vacuum was listed at $162.48 and sold for $64.99. A personal cooler was listed at $333.30 and sold for $99.99. A work light showed $118 crossed out and charged $59.

Check the "was" price in one minute
Search the exact product name and look for the same item on a second seller, ideally Amazon or the brand's own store page outside the sale. If the "regular price" only appears on the page that is selling it, treat the sale price as the price.
Then ask the simplest question: would you have paid the "was" number last month? On the pages we tracked, the big number never seemed to be what anyone paid. It exists so the smaller one feels like a win.
Read the guarantee before the price
Two details decide what a "risk-free" trial really costs. First, who pays return shipping. A 60-day trial that makes you pay shipping both ways can cost more than a cheap product is worth. Second, when the window starts: at order or at delivery. If it starts at order and the item ships slowly, you may have far fewer days than the page suggests.
Returns are common enough that this matters. The National Retail Federation estimates that online purchases come back at about 19.3 percent, so the return policy is worth more of your attention than any badge.
Treat countdown timers and "only 3 left" as design, not data
A timer that resets, a stock counter that never reaches zero and a "viral on TikTok" badge describe an advertising budget, not the product. In our reviews, the pages that lean hardest on them tend to show the widest gap between the crossed-out price and the real one. Judge the product at the price you would actually pay.
Where the real savings tend to be
Established brands sold through large retailers usually discount for real during Black Friday week, and the price history is easy to verify. For gifts, our gift guides list picks with verdict scores and guarantee terms, so you can compare before the sales start.
If you are shopping for a specific person, start with the recipient guides: gifts for her, for him, for mom and dad, stocking stuffers and white elephant picks are all linked from our main gift guide.
