BUYER'S GUIDE
Is iMemories Legit? Safety, Real Costs and Reviews of the Mail-In Digitizing Service (2026)
iMemories is a real, BBB-accredited (A+) digitizing company in Scottsdale, Arizona, rated 4.5 on Trustpilot. Here's how the SafeShip Kit works, what a typical box really costs once per-item fees are added, how your originals come back, and the complaints worth knowing about.

iMemories is legit. It's a Scottsdale, Arizona company that has been digitizing home movies and photos since 2004 and says it has handled more than 100 million items for over a million customers. The BBB lists it as an accredited business with an A+ rating, and Trustpilot shows 4.5 out of 5 across about 1,600 reviews. It works from its own 50,000-square-foot facility.
Because you're mailing irreplaceable tapes and photos, "is iMemories legit" is really several questions. Is shipping your originals safe? What will the whole job cost, given that the $14.99 kit is only the start? How do you get your files, and do you have to keep paying? This guide answers each one from iMemories' pricing page, its FAQ, the offer page we link to, and its public reviews.

How the service works
You order a SafeShip Kit. It's a crush-proof box with waterproof bags and shock-resistant bubble cushions, and it includes FedEx shipping to iMemories. You fill it with any mix of formats and send it off. No sorting or labelling is needed, according to the brand.
iMemories digitizes VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, 8mm, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV and MicroMini tapes, 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm film, and photos, slides and negatives. The kit holds a lot: the brand's figures are up to 30 VHS tapes, 100 8mm tapes or 200 MiniDV tapes, or 1,500 prints, 2,600 slides or 10,000 negatives.
Once your box arrives, the FAQ says you'll get an email within 5 to 7 days to review and approve the charges. Work goes ahead once you approve. That step is your safety net on cost: you see the bill before anything is digitized. After conversion, your originals are shipped back to you.
What it really costs
The SafeShip Kit is $14.99 on the current promotion, down from $29.99. Then you pay per item. iMemories' pricing page lists videotapes at $14.99 each, film at $14.99 per 50 feet, and photos at $0.49 each, all at the current 50%-off pricing.
Extras are optional. McKenzie AI enhancement is $4.99 per tape or reel and about 15 cents per photo. Downloads of your digital files are free. A USB drive starts at $19.99, and DVDs or Blu-rays are $9.99 per disc. The iMemories Cloud streaming service comes free for 30 days with every order, then costs $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year if you want to keep it.
A worked example: ten VHS tapes and 200 prints would be $14.99 for the kit, $149.90 for the tapes and $98 for the photos, about $263 before any extras. Since downloads are free, you don't have to keep the cloud subscription. Download your files and you own them.
For comparison, Legacybox sells kits priced by item count rather than per item. Its pricing page listed a 10-item Family kit at $319.98 when we checked. Which works out cheaper depends on what's in your box, because iMemories charges photos individually while Legacybox counts items.
Is it safe to mail your originals?
This is the biggest worry, and it's reasonable. iMemories' answer has three parts. The SafeShip Kit is built to protect fragile media, it's tracked by FedEx, and the brand says all originals are shipped back after conversion. iMemories also says it chose its Arizona facility partly to avoid natural-disaster risk. Its offer page claims it has never lost a memory.
Practical steps help too. Photograph or list what you send. Keep the tracking number. And if you have one or two truly irreplaceable reels, consider sending the rest first so you can see the process before you trust it with everything.
The return shipping of your originals is worth checking. The pricing page describes the kit as including free return shipping, while the FAQ says shipping fees apply to returning originals. Look at your approval email, which lists the charges, before you confirm.
What the reviews and complaints say
Trustpilot shows iMemories at 4.5 out of 5 across about 1,600 reviews. Reviewers praise a simple process, good communication and results that bring decades-old footage back to life. Many describe the emotional value of seeing late relatives again.
The complaints fall into a few groups. Some reviewers report quality issues on older tapes, such as horizontal bars or low resolution. That partly reflects the condition of the source tape, but it's worth knowing. Others say the final cost felt high or less transparent than expected, and a few report missing files or slow replies. iMemories responds to about 79% of negative Trustpilot reviews, usually within 48 hours.
The pricing complaints are the easiest to avoid. Count your items before you ship, work out the per-item total from the pricing page, and read the approval email carefully before you say yes.
Turnaround
iMemories' pages quote different timings. The pricing page says it takes about a week from receipt to online viewing, the offer page says 2 to 3 weeks, and the FAQ points to a live production schedule. Add shipping in both directions, and plan on several weeks in total. If you want the results as a gift for a holiday or anniversary, order early.
Who it's for
iMemories makes the most sense for a mixed collection: some VHS, some camcorder tapes, a few film reels, and a shoebox of prints or slides. Doing that yourself would mean finding a working VCR, a camcorder and a film scanner, and then spending many hours capturing in real time. Our guide on how to convert VHS to digital compares every realistic option.
If you have two or three VHS tapes and a working VCR, a DIY capture can be cheaper. And once your old media is digitized, a backup device like ThePhotoStick Omni can keep the newer photos on your phones and computers safe too.
Our verdict
iMemories is legit: an established, BBB-accredited A+ company with a strong Trustpilot record, a protective shipping kit, a charge-approval step before any work begins, and free downloads of your finished files. The main things to watch are the per-item costs, which add up for a big box, and the return-shipping line on your approval email.
For families with a closet of mixed-format memories that are slowly degrading, it's the simplest way to rescue them in one shipment, which is why our full iMemories review scores it 9.7 out of 10.
